I'm thinking of a project that I'm calling, for lack of a better working name, the "Life Transparency Project". My idea is that by living lives that are transparent (i.e. for all the world to see) I hope to break through all of the boundaries that have been setup as things "we just don't do" or "we just don't talk about" which I believe are keeping us from having common experiences. For example, what would happen if I told all of my friends how much money I make or how much I pay in taxes? I'm not ashamed of that and that information would help all of us talk about income and taxes. In some ways I wonder if our secret ballot in the United States and other things as a society we do in the name of privacy are being used against us. The secrecy of things keeps us from discussing things as a society and really dealing with issues or problems. Plus, I am suspicious that those things held in secret can actually be corrupted by those in power. How do I know that my vote or the votes of any of my fellow citizens is counted accurately if my ballot and every other ballot is secret? What would happen if we "advertised" our votes and we knew how everybody voted? We could take the power of those numbers and those results away from the secrecy of counting ballots.
